Who are we?

Mafutaga = Gathering of people, Tupulaga = Youth/young, Tokelau = Our heritage, Porirua = Our new home (MTTP)

MTTP are a group dedicated to maintaining Te Aganuku Tokelau in Porirua. We aspire to continue the voyage our ancestors took to maintain our culture and seek a prosperous future. Itโ€™s our job to nurture, build, and share our culture with future generations of Tokelau. We are guided by our National Body vision; ‘Learn from the Past, Live in the Present, Hope for the Future’.

This vision helps us to deliver on positive outcomes in youth wellbeing, cultural engagement and social cohesion by providing accessible opportunities in sport, recreation and community connection that builds leadership, teamwork and future employment pathways for Tokelauan youth. See the Vision/Mission tab for the activities undertaken.

Past

Mai na matua, Learn from the past

Maintaining Te Aganuku Tokelau in Porirua. To learn from our parents, elders and aspire to continue the voyage our ancestors took to look after our famlies and maintaining our culture in NZ. Itโ€™s our job to nurture, build, and share our culture with future generations of Tokelau.

Present

Mo ki tatou – Live in the present

Using initiatives to bring us together, MTTP uses sports and club activities as means to connect our Tokelau people in Porirua. It is intended that we help our youth gain pathway to represent their sports at the highest level whether it be for Aotearoa New Zealand or Tokelau homeland.

Future

Ki na fanau – Hope for the future

Our future is in our control. Coming from a proven line of seafarers and trial blazers, it is not foreign to apply these thought provoking skills to all aspects to the world we live in. Using Census stats to identify challenges and opportunities to better our future in Aotearoa New Zealand.

“The traditional Tokelau saying, โ€˜Taeao fakatiu te matagiโ€™ describes todayโ€™s sailing from Apia to Tokelau for members of the Council of Ongoing Government. A feeling of confidence that a better future awaits just over the horizon….”

With our National Body; Mafutaga Tupulaga Tokelau Niu Hila (MTTNH), we aspire to fulfill the vision of “Learn from the past, Live in the present, Hope for the future” by implementing initiatives across these 3 pillars locally and nationally. Keeping our culture, language and unique way of life, alive with an outlook at our future in New Zealand. The same hope our ancestors and grandparents have for us to navigate and strive through what’s ahead. Tokelau ke ola!
